Mexborough Sailor
One of the large band of South Yorkshire men who are “firing” the King’s ships is Stoker Jack Garbutt (24), eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Garbutt, 16, Victoria Street, Wath Road, Mexborough.
He joined the Navy in October, 1935, and declares the life good. For some time he has been aboard a destroyer and during the Spanish war he helped to transport refugees to France. Before war broke out he was heading for Singapore, but his family have had no word lately and do not know his whereabouts. Before joining up he was employed in the lamp room at Wath Main Colliery.
Like most men from this district Stoker Garbutt is a keen sportsman and he has played a good deal of football and done some boxing for his ship.
