S.J.A.B. Honour

A signal honour has been conferred upon Mrs H Yates, of 52 Doncaster Rd, Mexborough, with Lady Superintendent of the Mexborough Nursing division of the Denaby Main Corps of the S.J.A.B.

She has been admitted as a Serving Sister of the Order of St. John, and recently received the medal of the office from the hands of the Sub-Prior, Major General the Earl of Scarborough, K.G., C.B.E., J.C.B., T.D., in London.

Mrs Yates is only the second woman in the South Eastern area of Yorkshire to receive this honour, the other being Mrs Kirby of Denaby Main.

Mrs Yates joined the Denaby Main Corps in 1909. She received a Coronation Medal for services in Green Park, London , on the occasion of the coronation celebrations of King George and Queen Mary in 1911. The following year she attended a review by King George in Windsor Great Park. A month after that she rendered yeoman service when there was an explosion at Cadeby Colliery, which over 80 lives were lost; for her services there she received a medal.

Mrs Yates was responsible for the formation of a Nursing Division in Mexborough in 1916, and she was appointed Lady Superintendent of that Division.

In 1931 she represented the South-Eastern area at the review by Prince Arthur of Connaught, in Hyde Park, London. Mrs Yates has been honorary secretary to the Lady District Officer, Mrs Pickering since 1928. She is a member of the Volunteer Aid Detachment and has obtained the Instructor Certificate in Air Raid Precautions.
