Royal Humane Society’s Testimonial
Eleven-years-old Paul Deakin received the surprise of his life when he returned home from the cinema on Saturday afternoon. He was told by his proud parents that he had been awarded the Royal Humane Society’s testimonial on parchment for rescuing a friend from the canal near his home.
Paul’s father, Mr. W. H. Deakin, told a “South Yorkshire Times” reporter “This will be the best surprise he has ever had. He will be the proudest lad in the town.” Paul, of Cliff Street, Mexborough, was building a ‘den’ near the canal when he heard six-years-old Robert Hayes, of Hope Street, shouting from the water. Although not a strong swimmer Paul dived in and managed to get Robert out. Then he had the presence of mind to apply artificial respiration.
Mr. Deakin commented: “He and young Robert are the closest of friends now. Since the rescue Paul has concentrated on improving his swimming.” Paul, a student of Dolcliffe Road School, Mexborough, has already received a diploma together with a fountain pen and pencil from Mexborough Urban Council.
