Roman Terrace School Soccer XI
Through the courtesy of Mr. N. Bell. an assistant master at Roman Terrace School, Mexborough, we publish the accompanying photograph of the school’s soccer eleven. (It will be recalled that recently we referred to the 1931 school side’s outstanding exploits).
Mr. Bell writes: ” We have had an enjoyable season. Probably the best game of all was the last, when we played Kilnhurst C. of E, and lost 4-1, though the boys will remember beating Balby Street 8-1.
“We celebrated not winning the Totty Cup and NOT winning the League Championship with a tea at school. Parents provided a splendid tea for the boys—even a cake made in the school colours and complete with goalposts
The parents present Mesdames Parker, Mason. Schofield. Petty, Lenton and Swann. were kept very busy serving 35 hungry boys.
“As a souvenir of a season in which the game has always been more important than the prize. the footballers were each given an autographed photograph kindly presented by Billy Thompson, British and European lightweight boxing champion.
In the photograph are: Mr. Bell and Mr. Wilkinson (headmaster), Eric Walker. Tom Case. Peter Peplow, Peter Parker, Brian Lenton, Billy Cotton. Gordon Swann, Lawrence Mason, Brian Poyntost, Colin Schofield and Derek Needham.
