First Issue Of “Mexboro’ and Swinton Times” Under New Title, “South Yorkshire Times.”
3—Driver Herbert Duke, Mexborough, retired after 46 year’s service on L.N.E.R.
24– New Spiritualist Church opened at Mexborough.
27– General Election: Labour held Don Valley (Mr Tom Williams)
November
3– Swinton Players inaugurated free theatre scheme with Premier drivers. Play, “The Machine Master,” by Rawmarsh authors, A.A. Eaglestone and F Machin.
4– Arnold Binns stop by doctor’s orders during the attempt at Olympia, Mexborough, on his own world record for continuous roller skating (70 hours 14 minutes) after going 60 hours 9 minutes. (Mr Binns set up new record, at South Shields, of 73 hours 15 minutes on December 17th.
7– Presentation to Mr WD Egerton, chief engineer, Manvers Main, on retirement after 54 years service with the company.
Double wedding at Goldthorpe Roman Catholic Church: Margaret Smith to Mr H Larkin (Hull) and Alan Smith to Mr William Tillison.
12– Presentation to Rev Harry Lee and Mrs Lee at Conisborough, on departure for Saint Timothy’s, Crookes, Sheffield.
13– Announcement of the appointment of Mr Sydney Smith, of John Street school Wombwell to headship at Heptonstall
16– Harry Crossley, Mexborough British Light Heavyweight champion, beat Bob Cardinal, Bridlington and eliminating contest for British Heavyweight championship.
17 –Two double families rendered homeless by fire in Kings Road estate of Wombwell U.D.C.
Jump Church Players, in their third year, produced their first Gilbert and Sullivan (“The Gondoliers”).
20 – Bentley Colliery Disaster: 45 men killed, including Clifford Wilcock, Goldthorpe and William Brocklehurst, native and former resident of Highgate
Presentation to Mr W.B. Dunn, on retirement from position of foreman boilermaker at Mexborough Loco.
26– Swindon Library reopened after reconstruction.
27 — Dispute at Mitchell Main, involving 1540 men, over price and unemployment benefit: work resumed on 16th Dec,
28– Mr Arthur Greenwood, former Minister of health, open special housing estate for aged people at Rotherham; similar scheme in process of occupation at Mexborough; these being first schemes of the kind in South Yorkshire.
30– Miss Amy Johnson lectured in Olympia, Mexborough, on her Australian flight.

2— Agreement completed for 21 years’ lease by County Council of two new medical wards at Montagu Hospital, already in experimental use, as County Maternity Home.
4–Presentation to Mrs. M. E. Paley on retirement alter 21 years as head teacher at Adwick-on-Dearne School.
5—Mr. Thomas Laughton, oldest member of Mexborough Parish Church choir, held 77th birthday party, later received letter of congratulation from Bishop.
6—Wath Education Sub-Committee considered proposal to establish Care of Children Committee.
9— Friday opening of market proposed by Mexborough Chamber of Trade
Announcement of £16,000 assisted scheme of street works for Denaby.
10— Mexborough P.M. circuit held, at Mexborough their first circuit bazaar.
14—Presentations to Canon Leteux on departure from Denby.
21— Kilnhurst Parish Church celebrated dedication anniversary for first time; thechurch is 72 years old.
28—Five Deputies fatally gassed while on inspection of Frickley Colliery.
29—Rev J. W. T. Pascoe instituted vicar of Conisborough.
31—COMING-OF-AGE CELEBRATIONS OF VISCOUNT MILTON, HEIR OF EARL FITZWILLIAM.
