Rescue Parchment for Brave Swinton Boy 14

For rescuing a seven-year-old boy from Swinton canal in July, George Peter Round, aged 14, of 89, Frederick Street, Mexborough, is receive a Testimonial and Parchment from the Royal Humane Society.

Scene of the rescue was Bowbroom Locks, where Peter was watching some men fishing. On the opposite bank, Raymond Frost, of Valley Road, Swinton,  was playing with a group of children near the canal when he fell in.

Raymond was sinking for the third time when Peter reached him and hauled him to the bank.

Peter kept quiet about the incident when he reached home, but Police prepared a report based on details supplied by his school friends.

Then Coun. A. Newsam brought the matter before Swinton Urban Council General Purposes Committee and the Royal Humane Society were requested to consider making a suitable award to Peter for his brave action. The Council have also congratulated him.

Peter taught himself to swim in the canal about three years ago, but has had no life saving training. In 1949 he was awarded an elementary swimming certificate at Dolcliffe Road Modern School.

He is the elder son of Mr. and Mrs. George A Round.
