Pupils Go Down to the Farm
An afternoon on the farm may seem a long way from nature study lessons, but for the children of Park Road Infants’ School, Mexborough, it is the ideal way of seeing nature in action.
The children, who are all taking part in a school project on dairy farming, organised by their teacher, Mrs. A. Kitson, visited Dovecote Farm, Barnburgh, last week when they saw a farm at work.
The boys were great impressed by the farm’s prize bull Dumas, while the girls concentrated on the more gentle week-old calves and the farm’s pet lamb Lucy, which acts and thinks like a dog.
The children were shown a cow in calf, only 24 hours before the birth was expected. Through the skilful and loving care from the farmer, Mr. M. Richardson, they were able to see the shape of the calf inside its mother’s womb.
“It’s Smashing!!”
A visit to the milking shed and a ride in the haycart brought the children’s outing to a close but it has certainly left them with more than a few memories.
Seven-years-old Shaun Johnson said he enjoyed seeing the cows. “I think I will be a farmer when I grow up because it’s smashing on a farm. I like animals, but the cows are the best.”
Michelle Chambers and Jacqueline White said, they too, liked animals “The bull was nice but it frightened me sometimes,” said Jacqueline, who also wants to work on a farm.
As part of their project the children have painted a frieze around their classroom and have written stories about their farm visit.
