Prisoner Before The Bench.
Our Doncaster correspondent telegraphs: The extraordinary shooting case at Mexbro’ has created a sensation in the district, and great sympathy is felt for Sergeant Matthews who is held in great respect as an officer. The prisoner is young miner named Harold Carr, aged 24, living at Flowitt Street, and his conduct is in inexplicable. It appears that has been summoned
‘l’m going to kill you,” and fired at the Sergeant, the bullet going into his right side. P.c.’s Haigh and Burrows went for him, and he turned round and fired a second shot, which struck Haigh on the tunic button and grazed his right wrist. They went after him and fired a third shot at P.c. Bur rows which grazed the skin of the right arm. The man was arrested. The Sergeant was taken to the hospital, where lie was still.
P.c. Haigh was the only witness called. He said that last night he was on duty with Sergeant Matthews about 10.30 when he saw the prisoner. He ran off the footpath into the middle of the road. He shouted out, “Now Matthews, I’ve come to kill you,” and raised his right arm. Witness heard a report firearms. Immediately after the Sergt. shouted out, “I’ve been shot.” At the same time, witness felt something strike his wrist. rushed at prisoner, who turned round both on him and P.c. Burrows, and said, “I’ll kill you, you —— .” He fired a second shot, and the bullet struck the third button of witness’s tunic on the right breast. He also fired third shot.
The Chairman ,(to prisoner): do you want to ask any questions?
Prisoner: I’ve onlv one. Did I say Matthews, “I’ll kill you, you ——”? Witness: Yes.
Prisoner: You are a liar.
The Chairman: You must take his word. Have you anything say why you should not be remanded?
Prisoner: All I have to say is I did not say what the policeman says I did.
Prisoner was then remanded for a week, and removed back to the cells.
