Party for Mexborough Octogenarian

Eighty-year-old Mrs Ellen Leasley, 40, Hope Street, Mexborough, had an enjoyable time with her family at a specially organised party at West Street Hall, Mexborough, on Saturday.

She watched 20 of her grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren play games and dance with her sons and daughters, and joined in community singing with them.

Her 80th birthday was last Thursday, so it was appropriate that the members of her family who are widely scattered throughout Yorkshire and Lancashire were together in celebration.

Born at Worsborough Dale, Mrs Leasley is the widow of Mr Thomas Leasley, who came to work at Barron’s glassworks in 1894. He previously worked at Woods glassworks, Barnsley.

Mrs Leasley has four sons and nine daughters. She has 36 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

The first tenant in Hope Street, Mrs Leasley still lives in the same house
