Early Morning Arrest of Father and Son
A young Mexborough police officer’s alertness in arresting two men for stealing a roll of linoleum from a wagon in Mexborough railway goods yard was commended by Doncaster West Riding magistrates yesterday.
Charles H. Deakin, Wood street, was sent to prison for three months, and his son, Charles (19), was hound over.
In the early hours of Sunday Police constable Jowitt saw the men carrying a roll lino and chased them, catching the eider prisoner. He found a railway wagon which contained rolls of similar lino had been broken open, and both prisoners eventually admitted the theft.
Superintendent Cordon explained that that night six wagons were broken open and goods stolen.
Inspector Glavey, of the L.N.E.R. police, said they had suffered serious losses in the yard, and he wished to compliment the young officer on his smartness.
Deakin, senior, said it would not have happened if they had not had some drink, but the chairman, Mr. Mark Nokes, said they were ashamed him, if he were not of himself, in taking his boy drinking and then stealing.
The younger prisoner was bound over for 12 months.
