Billy Yates (Mexborough), fought a draw with Terence Morgan, bantam -weight champion of Wales. in the principal contest over twelve three-minute rounds at the Leeds Brunswich Stadium on Sunday. It was a splendidly contested bout in which both men showed smart boxing abilities and clever ringcraft. Morgan forced the fighting in the early rounds and employed a straight left to useful advantage. Be landed some well-timed blows to the head, but was not as effective as Yates at in-fighting. The Mexborough lad was the harder hitter and in the seventh round cut Morgan’s eye. Yates made strenuous efforts to gain a knockout after this. The Welshman fought back well and successfully avoided them.
Tom Cowley, the popular Thurnscoe flyweight gained a rather unsatisfactory win over Bert Kirkby (Birmingham). the ex-flyweight champion, at Birmingham on Monday. The bout was scheduled for 15 rounds but terminated in the eighth.
In the first two rounds Kirkby hit low on several occasion and was rightly cautioned. Both men fought unfairly in the third round and were warned jointly. Kirkby had slightly the better of the next round and the subsequent rounds were fought at a fast pace and were even. In the eighth round Cowley sent Kirby to the door but he was little damaged. On rising he refused to continue, alleging that his hand had “gone,’ and Cowley was awarded the verdict.
Frank Rounds, Mexborough, was forced to retire at the end of the sixth round by Frank Depledge, one of Sheffield’s most promising lads, at the Norfolk Drill Hall, on Tuesday, The fight was a “supporter” to the clash between Dick Burke and Little Minor.
