Odds and Ends

The Mexborough Physical Culture Club whose spectacular display at the Mexborough School Sports was so much enjoyed, has been in existence for about five years, and was started by Mr. Howard Booth who, when he left the district about four years ago, handed over to Mr. C. H. Steadman the present secretary.

The club has a membership of about 30 and the members meet three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, their gymnasium being in premises off Main Street. They pay 6d. a week. and these subscriptions are the club’s only source of revenue. Mr. Steadman acts as instructor for gymnastics and acrobatic, Mr. A. Cook for physical exercises and Mr. Barry Robinson is in charge of boxing. The club is affiliated to the Health and Strength League.

Tomorrow evening the Mexboro’ Section of the Sheffield United Harriers (Walking section) are holding their third annual walking race, an eight-mile course along High Street, Adwick Road and through Barnburgh, Goldthorpe, Bolton and Roman Terrace to the Old Mason’s Arms Hotel, which is also the starting point.  The walk is timed to start at 5.30pm and prominent walkers who will take part are J. Wilson, the Northern Counties 30 miles Champion and the Sheffield United team, winners of the Northern Counties team championship. Local men who will be on view include William Bullock winner of the last “Times” Walk and his brother Arnold, both of Mexboro’. The organisers of the race are indebted to a number of Mexboro’ tradesmen for prizes.
