Obituary – Samuel Thomas Jackson
The death occurred on Wednesday with tragic suddenness of Mr Samuel Thomas Jackson (62), “Ivanhoe,” Harlington Rd, Mexborough.
Mr Jackson had been ill since September, but recently seemed to have improved somewhat. Before lunch on Wednesday, Mr Jackson had a short stroll, and when he returned ate an hearty dinner. Shortly afterwards, however, he collapsed and died a few hours later with out regaining consciousness.
Mr Jackson was a builder and contractor until his retirement many years ago. He built the whole of Lorna Road, and all but two houses in Hall Avenue, and he was one of the biggest property owners in the town.
Born at New Holland, Lincolnshire, he came to Mexborough at the age of eight. He was apprenticed to a joiner for five years, and took a four years course in building construction at Sheffield. He then set up by himself and had built a block of houses in Victoria Road before he was 27 years old.
Mr Jackson’s hobbies were with the breeding of Hackney horses and music. He competed with success at most of the local shows and further afield, and he only got rid of his last horses two years ago.
Mr Jackson was never himself a musician, but he took a great interest in the work of the Mexborough Military Band, of which three of his sons are prominent members. He has been president since the Band was started five years ago.
