Well Known Mexboro’ Bank Official
The death occurred suddenly on Saturday of Mr. Winchcombe Henry Howard Hartley (52), eldest son of the late Rev. W. R. Hartley, M.A.. Rector of Barnburgh for 40 years.
Mr. Hartley was taken ill at Mexborough on Wednesday on his way home from business, and died following an operation in a Sheffield nursing home. He was cashier at the Mexborough branch of the Midland Bank.
As a boy, Mr. Hartley was a chorister in Lincoln Cathedral. He joined the staff of the London Joint Stock Bank (now Midland Bank) at Mexborough on November 13th, 1906. Before the Great War Mr. Hartley was transferred to the Ripon branch of the Bank, from which he joined R.N. Forces in 1915. Mr. Hartley saw service overseas in the R.F.A. in France, and received injuries which necessitated his removal to England.
After the war Mr. Hartley returned to the Bank at Ripon from which he was transferred to Mexborough, where he had been cashier for many years.
Mr. Hartley was especially interested in church music. While at Ripon he was a member of the Voluntary Cathedral Choir. He was a great supporter of, and a regular attender at Barnburgh Parish Church, which has suffered a grievous loss through his death.
Mr. Hartley, who was a Freemason, leaves a widow and one son, Mr. W. H. Hartley, who has served for three years in H.M. Forces in the R.A., and who survived Dunkirk after seeing service in France.
