Obituary – Mr. W. G. Hudson

Former Manvers Chief Wages Clerk

The funeral took place last Thursday of a well-known former Mexborough resident, Mr William Gerrard Hudson (80) of 178, Pixmore Way, Letchworth (Herts), who retired in 1934 after 50 years’ service with Manvers Main Collieries Ltd.

For 25 year he had been head of the wages department and for 20 years was an active member of St. George’s Church Mexborough, of which he was churchwarden for 17 years.

Mr. Hudson, who died on February 18th, was cremated at Cambridge, following a service in St. Paul’s Church, Letchworth, which Mr Hudson had attended during his five years’ residence in Letchworth. On his retirement Mr. Hudson, who leaves a widow and two daughters. lived at Cleveleys before going to Hertfordshire.

Principal mourners were: Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Wilks, Mr. and Mrs. G Taylor, Mr. G Hudson, Miss M. Taylor, Mr F. Roberts (Mexborough), Mr. and Mrs. Devereaux (Torquay). Mr and Mrs. S. Walton and Mr. and Mrs. J. Powell. The widow was unable to attend owing to indisposition.

Mr. Hudson was a staunch supporter of the old Mexborough Football Club and Mexborough and Swinton cricket clubs. He was an old school-friend of Sam Livesey. the actor, who he occasionally used to visit. His wife is a daughter of the late Mr. G. R. Rawlin, who was overseer and rate collector in Swinton.

On the occasion of his retirement. Mr. Hudson was presented with a gold watch by the Manvers Main Colliery Company “in recognition of 50 years’ valued service with the company.”

A memorial service to Mr. Hudson, will be held at St. George’s Church, Mexborough. at 9-30 a.m. on Sunday
