Obituary – Mr. Theophilus Gough
A well-known Swintonian, noted for his activities in connection with Mexborough Montagu Hospital and Swinton Old Men’s Retreat, Mr. Theophilus Gough, of 26. Rookery Road. Swinton, died at his home after a sudden illness last Tuesday at the age of 75.
A member of the Retreat since its inauguration, Mr.Gough was for a brief period its chairman. His efforts on behalf of Mexborough Montagu Hospital date back twelve years and in addition to being a member of the Board there he was also a Life Governor.
When the Hospital Sunday movement existed Mr. Gough always took a large part in the organisation of the events. He was quite a good musician and played the euphonium in Swinton Town Band and Mexborough Plant Hotel Band.
He was until last year, when he resigned, president of Swinton Old People’s Treat Fund, and had held that position since its formation. His main interests lay in work for charity and in his public positions.
Mr. Gough had been employed at Manvers Main Colliery as a surface worker for over 51 years and he retired on pension six years ago. He leaves a widow, one son, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
