Mr. S. Wilson

Cadeby Main Electrical Engineer

For 15 Years chief electrical engineer at Cadeby Main Colliery, Conisbrough with Amalgamated Denaby Collieries, and (since nationalisation) the National Coal Board, Mr Sidney Wilson (51) and 155, Sheffield Road, Warmsworth, died at his home on Saturday. He had been in ill-health about two years.

Mr. Wilson, a native of Mexborough, was the son of Mr. and Charles Wilson, of Auckland Road, Mexborough. He was a devoted church worker, especially at Mexborough Parish Church, and an enthusiastic gardener. He was a keen supporter of the allotment movement and a prize winner of some distinction with chrysanthemums and garden produce.

A former choirboy at Mexborough Parish Church, he was also a former choirmaster at the church and a former member of the Parochial Church Council. For the past eight years, since his marriage, he had resided at Warmsworth, and he leaves a widow and one child.

His death has shocked his many friends and colleagues at Cadeby Colliery, Starting as a boy apprentice 38 years ago, Mr Wilson by dint of hard work and study, became the colliery’s chief electricjal engineer.

Speaking in appreciation this week of his worth, a colleague said: ” Sid could always be relied on to do anyone a good turn. A lovable type of chap, he was held in the greatest respect and esteem by everyone from the Management downwards.”

Evidence of this was revealed by the large number of mourners at the funeral at Mexborough on Wednesday. The body remained in the Parish Church during the night.
