Obituary – Mr John Brown
A former member of Mexborough Military Military Band and Oxford Road Methodist Church, Mr. John Brown (60) has died at Kirkby Stephen.
A native of Mexborough, Mr Brown resided in the town at Chaucer Street, but left for Westmorland prior to the last war. Eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs John Brown, he was employed at Denaby Main Colliery as a miner and served in the K.O.Y.L.I. during the first world war.
At Kirkby Stephen Mr. Brown worked at the Hartley Limestone Quarries, and played with the local Silver Band.
An ardent trade unionist, he was on the committee of the Local Labour Party, and was also a committee member of the Co-operative Society. He was a ken member and former secretary of Toc H. and an Oddfellow. He is survived by a widow and four daughters. The interment took place at Kirkby Stephen on Saturday.
Mr. Brown’s only surviving relatives in Mexborough are a brother, Mr. Teddy Brown, of Morton Road and a sister, Mrs. J. Hague, Hirsgate, sister-in-law to the former British heavyweight champion, Iron Hague.
