Obituary

Mr Alfred Hudson.

The death occurred on Monday of Mr. Alfred Hudson (48), eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Hudson, late of Highwoods Road, Roman Terrace, and now living in retirement at Cleveleys, Blackpool.

Mr Alfred Hudson started work in the offices at the Manvers Collieries, where his father and, later, his brothers were employed. He and his brothers joined the K.0.Y.L.I. in the early of the last war, but service seriously impaired his health and he was discharged. He returned to the colliery, but shortly afterwards found occupation in the South.

Coming back to Manvers, he quickly re-established himself in social and sporting circles. He possessed a good voice (being trained in the choir of St. George’s Church, where his father was a church- warden for many years) and his services were in popular demand. Tennis was his favourite game and he was a member of the Swinton Claremont Club, of which, for a time, he was secretary. He was the goalkeeper when he and his brothers played hockey with the Swinton team, which ranged amongst the best in the north of England.

Thirteen years ago he joined the staff of a film company in London and remained in the south until a little more than a year ago, when his poor health compelled him to join his parents in the hope that the climate would restore him.

He was a jolly, likeable and generous fellow and his untimely death will be regretted by many old friends in South Yorkshire.

It is only a few months since Fred, the youngest son, died. He was invalided from Salonika and never fully recovered from the strain of the war.
