Obituary – George Hales

The death occurred suddenly last Thursday of Mr. Geo. Hales (62). 44. Church Street. Mexborough.

A native of Redford. Mr. Hales served his apprenticeship as a printer in Torquay and played for the Torquay Rugby Club. In his early thirties Mr. Hales came to Yorkshire and was appointed manager of the Woodhouse branch office of the “South Yorkshire Times,” a position he held for about fifteen years.

During the past fifteen years he has been employed at the head office of the ‘South Yorkshire Times.” Mr. Hales was at work on Thursday morning and his death took place in the evening. In recent years he travelled extensively in Germany, France and Italy as well as the British Isles, and he was very fond of gardening.

He leaves two sons and two daughters, his wife having died fifteen years ago. The funeral was at Woodhouse on Tuesday, and in addition to the family there were present Mr. H. C. Parkin (accountant) and Mr. J. T. Rowan (father of the Chapel), representing the “South Yorkshire Times” proprietors and staff. Wreaths were from Mr. and Mrs. P. B. Hales, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hales (sons and daughters-in-law), “Dennis and Basil” (grandchildren). Mr. and Mrs. E. Clarke and grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. E. Storey and grandchildren; (daughters and sons-in-law), the “Times” Printing Company and works colleagues.
