A Noted Public Figure

Formerly a prominent figure in local government. Mr James Kelly, of Oxford Street Mexborough, died at his home on Monday

Aged 73. Mr. Kelly served for many years on both Mexborough and Swinton Urban Councils.

He served for 13 years on Swinton Council, then when the Roman Terrace district which he represented as a Labour member, was taken into the Mexborough Urban area, he served on Mexborough Council for another 13 years. He retired six years ago.

He was Chairman of Swinton Urban Council, and was Chairman at Mexborough twice.

Mr. Kelly was a Wath Main N.U.M. branch official for over 30 years, from 1921 to 1944, branch president, and later secretary until his retirement some two years ago. He first worked at Manvers Main Colliery, and was later transferred to Wath Main.

During the first World War Mr Kelly served in the Royal Navy.
