New Police Inspector

Mexboro’ Officer Twice Commended by Bench

Police Inspector George Metcalfe, now of Pontefract, took up duty at Mexborough, where he succeeds Inspector H. Waugh, on Monday.

A native of Askrigg, North Yorkshire, Inspector Metcalfe has had 17 years in the Force and it was only last September, after 6 years at Goole, where he was a Sergeant, that he was promoted and moved to Pontefract Borough.  Since that move he has been twice commended by the Bench, the latest occasion being last Monday, in connection with a case of robbery with violence upon an American soldier, one of whose assailants was sent to gaol for two years at Leeds Assizes.

Inspector Metcalfe began his Police service at Menston in the Otley Division, and now takes charge of one of the biggest Police sub-divisions in the West Riding.  He has been a successful sprinter, played cricket in Police teams and was in the Pontefract Police football team which last Season reached the final for the Chief Constable’s cup.
