Councillor Mrs. Singleton of Mexborough, has been appointed chairman of the Don Valley Public Assistance Committee, having been promoted from the position of vice-chairman.
Mrs. Singleton entered public life lees than ten years ago. In 1922 she became secretory of the women’s section of the Mexborough Labour Party; in 1926 she was entrusted with the distribution of about £2,000 in special relief to sick and maternity cases among those distressed by the coal dispute.
In the same year she was elected the Mexborough Urban District Council, after two unsuccessful attempts. She was the first and still is the only woman to serve on the Council, and this year she is vice-chairman, with the prospect of becoming chairman next year.
She was appointed in 1926 to the Mexborough Education Subcommittee and was chairman last year. She has been chairman of the Mexborough Child Welfare and Maternity Committee since 1928, several years she has been social secretary of the Mexborough Division of the St John Ambulance Brigade, Denaby Main Corps.
She is also secretary of the Mexborough auxiliary of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, from mainly her initiative, and is a member of the local committee of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
She represents the Mexborough UDC on the Doncaster and Mexborough joint Hospital Board, and the Mexborough Swinton and Wath joint ambulance committee; a financial secretary of the South Yorkshire Layman Women’s Adviser Council; take a keen interest in the work of the Mexborough Nursing Association and the Mexborough Children’s Convalescent Homes, and was recently co-opted the West Riding Education Committee.
