New Chairman

Mr. Tom Chambers

Mexboro’ Urban District Council.

Mr. Tom Chambers, who for the second time in his career becomes chairman of the Mexboro’ Urban District Council, is a native of Great Houghton, but has lived in Mexboro’ since boyhood, and for a good many years has been stablished in, business here as a butcher.

He was educated at the Mexboro’ Congregational School, under the late Mr. A. Lee.

He was first elected to the Council in 1905 and has served continuously on that authority since. He became chaff man in, 1909-10. During the earlier part of his Council career he made highways administration his speciality, and for a number of years was chairman of the Highways Committee. It was under his auspices that the “Durax” system of granite paving was introduced into Mexboro’. Later he turned his attention to the electricity undertaking, and has been chairman of the’ Electric Lighting Committee for several years.

Outside municipal business Mr. Chambers is actively associated with many forms of public life. For a number of years he has been vice-president of the Mexboro’ Cricket and Athletic Club, and an active supporter of most forms of sport. During the war he served for some time on the Tribunal, and was also appointed sectional commander of the Mexboro’ Special Police, an office he still holds. He is also president of the Mexboro’ and District Butchers’ Association.

He has been identified with the Congregational Church throughout his life. He has an alert intelligence, and is a very high type of public man.
