Encouraging First Day at Mexborough.

Tho 10th annual Mexborough Musical Competition Festival opened yesterday in most encouraging circumstances. The fine weather favoured the many visitors from wide area and with no industrial dispute having the adverse effects of last year, it is hoped that the festival (which will be concluded to-day) will be established on a sound financial basis.

The scarcity of money, however, has been felt in the usual preliminary sale of subscribers’ tickets, but with the record number of entries 437 compared with the previous record of 350, set up last year —and with yesterday’s substantial measure of public interest, there is prospect of a successful issue from every point of view.

The competitors, numbering well over 1,000, reflect the musical standing of the festival that they are representative of Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Huddersfield, Doncaster, Hull, and towns and villages between and farther afield.
