Mrs E Squires of Mexborough
Outstanding Work for Hospital
The death occurred at 120 Doncaster Road Mexborough, on Sunday, of Mrs Eliza Squires, who will long be remembered for her work for Mexborough Montagu Hospital, Springwell House, Doncaster, and many similar good causes.
Mrs Squires was 80 and was the widow Mr George Squires, a former well-known Mexborough businessman.
Born at Binbrook, Lincolnshire, Mrs Squires was the daughter of a farmer. She married Mr George Squires in 1891, and they went out to South Africa. They lived in Durban for three years and then Mr Squires returned to take over his father’s business in Mexborough.
Mrs Squires became a member of the Central Methodist Church, which are supported ever since.
Early interest in the Montagu hospital goes back many years, and since 1923 she has been secretary of the hospital ladies committee, succeeding Mrs John Clayton, in this post. She served for some years under the presidency of the Honourable Mrs Lindley Wood, and later became a member of the Board of Management, and of the House Committee, and a life governor.
During the past few years she has handed over about £1800 annually as a result of efforts by the Ladies Committee. Mrs Squires herself had been instrumental in organising many efforts for the Hospital.
