Mr Redmond Looks to His Union
A “Times” reporter was the first to notify Mr JR Redman of the Mexborough Labour Party’s resolution.
In reply Mr Redmond said, “I am not an individual member of the Mexborough Labour Party of the Don Valley Divisional Labour Party, but I do and shall continue to represent the Mexborough branch of the Aslef until such time as they withdraw me as their delegate.
That is the only thing I am going to say. I shall get kicked out of the labour ranks when my branch says I have to go.”
Mr Redmond entered the trade union movement in 1900 at Chester. On been transferred to Mexborough in 1907 he was appointed a member of the local branch committee, and later became one of the delegate and a representative of the Shed Committee.
During the war he was correspondence secretary of the branch. He has attended many deputations and in 1923 was delegate to the local Labour Party.
For the last six years he has been auditor to the Don Valley Divisional Labour Party, and as a member of the sub- executive council a prominent part in general elections. For the past 10 years he has been secretary of the local W.E.A., and for five years honorary secretary of the Mexborough and district Miners Welfare Lectures Committee, and has procured 15 courses of lectures for the district.
