Mexborough Education Loss

Mexborough’s Divisional Education Officer, Mr. Ernest Brogden Stockdale,  who devoted 44 years of his working life to education, died in Mexborough Montagu Hospital on Monday, Aged 61.

Mr. Stockdale lived at 27, Hall Avenue, Mexborough.

Born at Pudsey, Mr Stockdale’s first job was as a clerk in a Batley dye works. He joined the West Riding Education 4 Department at County Hall, Wakefield, in November, 1914.

He then served in the education offices at Selby and Ecclesfield before moving to Mexborough in 1935 to take up the appointment of Divisional Clerk. Under a scheme of reorganisation in 1945, he became Education Officer for the division.

An extremely conscientious and energetic official, he gave valuable service to the district at a time when complicated changes were in the air.

During the 1914-18 War Mr. Stockdale served in the Sherwood Foresters and attained the rank of Sergeant, and in the last war he held a commission in the Home Guard. He was a member of the Mexborough Mess of the Fellowship of the Services. .

Mr. Stockdale was a member of Mexborough Musical Festival Committee and formerly of the Rotary Club and Mexborough Operatic and Dramatic Society.

Married at Wakefield in September, 1926. Mr, Stockdale leaves a widow. Mrs. Emily Stockdale, and two sons.
