Mr. Alfred Barrett, Mexboro’.
The death occurred. Thursday last of Mr. Alfred Barrett, of 58, Princess road, Mexboro’, a well-known and deeply respected townsman. Mr. Barrett had been a sufferer from rheumatism for many years, had been bedridden for a long period.
He was particularly well known to the older generations of Mexboro’, people, who remember him and the services he rendered the town in his capacity of Inspector of, Police in Mexboro’, a position he held for nine years.
Mr. Barrett, who was 70 years of age, joined the police force as a you to man,, and served at Street-houses, Wibsey, Weatherby, and Idle, in the Yorkshire district, and it was while, at the latter place that he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. He was posted to Mexboro’ as inspector about 32 years ago.
Many years ago he held the office of secretary to the Prince of Wales Theatre Company, and for a long time served variously as secretary, treasurer, and trustee of the Roman Terrace Primitive Methodist Chapel, members of which acted as bearers at the funeral, which took place at the Mexboro’ Cemetery on Tuesday. The Rev. E. Hope officiated.
