Anxious Days for Mexborough Family

With only seven days left before he came out of the Reserve, Lance Corporal George Williams Glarvey, of Mexborough, was recalled to his regiment, and on Wednesday was reported missing in Korea.

He is second son of Mr and Mrs T Glarvey, of 144, Hirst Gate Mexborough and has been serving in Korea since September, 1950, with the Gloucestershires.

He joined the Regular Army in 1938 and was serving in Egypt when the second World War commenced. During the war he served in Malta, Italy and Sicily. After the Italian campaign he returned home, but took part in the D-Day landing when he was wounded. He later returned and served in Germany and France.

He was discharged in 1946 and began work as a slater and tiler. In August. 1950, he was recalled to his regiment and by November was in Korea.

Mrs. Glarvey, his mother, said her son did not say much about the fighting when he wrote home. He is a dispatch rider and signalman. ‘We are living in hope that he will be all right: she said, and her younger son, “Paddy,” added, “He’ll get out of it somehow, you can bet.”

Lance Corporal Garvey was married at Doncaster about two months ago to Miss Edith Allen Reeder, daughter of Mr and Mrs R. Reeder, of Park Rd, Kilnhurst. He is 30

His elder brother Thomas, also served during the war and was mentioned in dispatches for bravery in North Africa.

Footnote.-The Garvey brothers were school mates of Michael O’Neill of Conisbrough who was also earlier this week reported missing.
