A ” Waft Of Wind.”
Milk Dealer Caught At The Corner.
Thomas Jones, a motor mechanic, of Mexboro’, was summoned at Doncaster on Tuesday for having driven a, motor car to the danger of the public at Mexboro’.
Isaiah Thomas Walker, a milk purveyor, of Lower Dolcliffe Road, Mexboro’, said that about 5-40 p.m. on Dec. 23, he was riding along Wellington street, Mexboro’, in. a milk float, driving a pony, on the left of the road. When he was about twenty yards from the corner of the road, preparing to turn into Carlisle Street, he saw a motor car coming round the corner on the wrong side. No warning was given, and the car crashed into the float on the offside. The float was overturned. As the car hit the cart, witness jumped from the float. Witness went to the driver and asked him what he was doing. Defendant replied: “Are you insured?”
Witness replied that he was not, and defendant said, “Well, I am.”
Whilst witness went for a police officer, defendant moved his car to the proper side of the road.
John Ashton, an engine driver, of. Carlisle street, Mexboro’, said he was outside his house, with his back to the road, when he heard a motor car pass him and felt a “waft” of wind. The car turned the corner into Wellington Street, and witness heard a crash. He went into Wellington Street, and saw the milk float overturned on the pavement, and the car near the float.
Jones said he was taking a new car from Main street to Adwick road,, Mexboro’. As it was a new, car, a control washer was fixed, and he was travelling in the second gear. The control washer prevented the car from travelling at more than ten miles an hour when in second gear. As he turned the corner he noticed a milk float on the crown of the road, about eight or ten yards in front. He could not see any light on the float. He attempted to pull up, but as the road was greasy the car slipped and crashed into the float.
He was fined £3.
