Midland League
A Splendid Win for Wombwell over the Leaders.
Wombwell 4 Scarborough 0
Giving their best display of the season Wombwell gained a well-deserved victory o 4-0 over the Midland League leaders, Scarborough, in their “feast” match, yesterday.
The game attracted an excellent crowd and the display should do the club much good. Early in the game a penalty was awarded against Scarborough for hands by Severn, and this seemed to upset the visitors. Afterwards they were disorganised and their forward work was poor.
Wombwell scored twice in each half, being just as effective against the wind as when it was behind them. Winnell, Armitage (penalty), Briggs, and Barber got the goals.
The outstanding men for Wombwell were the wingers Briggs and Barber. Hopkinson put in some fine work at back. Auckland, a Wombwell half-back, was knocked out, and it is feared that he has suffered fractured ribs.
Scunthorpe United 4 Mexborough Town 1
After a shaky opening Scunthorpe United playing five reserves, gave a bright display, against Mexborough last evening, and merited their 4-1 win.
Ellis gave Mexborough -the lead after save minutes, but two minutes later Baynham equalised from a penalty, while before the interval Read gave the home team the lead In the second half Adams soared twice.
Scunthorpe had to play hard for their win for Mexborough never gave up. and had a good share of the play, their forwards being clever and always ready to shoot. Scunthorpe defended well, and their forwards, especially in the second half, played sparkling football.
