Mexbro’s New Cinema – The Majestic

September 1927

Mexborough and Swinton Times September 23, 1927

The design reproduced shows the front elevation of the new Majestic Cinema, shortly to be built in Bank Street by Mexborough Cinema Theatres, Limited.

The front is a handsome one of terra cotta dressing and red brick, with a well-designed main entrance. The interior has been designed on up-to-date lines. There is seating for about 1000 persons, with tip-up chairs throughout, nicely upholstered. The well of the hall will take about 750 patrons, and the balcony about 250. In the balcony there will be 20 in. tub chairs.

A modern ventilation plant will he installed, and altogether the hall promises to be one of the most comfortable in the district. A 20ft. screen will be installed, and the operating box at the rear of the balcony will be of the most recent design and fitted with first-class equipment. In the view of the proprietors the hall will fill a long-felt want at that end of the town.

The plane were approved by the Mexboro’ Urban Council this week, and the contracts for the building. etc., are being let at once. The licence has been obtained, and the company intend to have the place ready for opening by next autumn.

The hall will have a frontage of loft and a depth of about 100ft. It will stand or, the site between the Public Hall and the Wesleyan Church, and fill up satisfactorily the gap in the architecture along that side of Bank Street. The front of the hall has been set back to keep the line with the Wesleyan Church, and there will be plenty of room for visitors to the cinema to queue in front.

Th6 architect is Mr. Barry Slater, of Doncaster.
