The Council, he said, were also prepared to pay up to £5 for lighting around the hall. Coun. White assured the meeting that the Council would give their support in helping to make the week a success.
Singer as Opener
It was reported that Miss Doreen Lavender, the radio singer, had consented to open the week at a ceremony in Post Office Square on Thursday. The President of the Chamber of Trade. Mr H.. May, and Chairman of Mexborough Urban Council, Coun G. W Hurst, will speak at the opening ceremony.
The first prize for the lucky programme competition will be a week at ‘Blackpool, and there will also be some 50 other prizes given by tradespeople in the town.
The prizes will be displayed in the shop window of the trader giving them. The meeting agreed that three prizes of £3, £2 and £1 be awarded for the children’s misspelt words competition. The prizes will be awarded to the first three correct entries opened.
The official programme for the week will contain the entry forms for both the jumbled letters and children’s misspelt words competitions„ entries for which can be handed in any day during the week up to Saturday November 26th,
Results of the competitions will be announced on November 28th. and the programme numbers will be displayed with the prizes in shop windows on that day.
Mr. H. G. Constable suggested that a collection box might be placed in the centre of the town into which children could put their entries.
It was pointed out that it would be better to allow the children to take their entry to a shop in their own area rather than come into the busy centre of the town.
H Eagles reported that it was hoped to obtain on loan equipment in connection with the street lighting display from neighbouring areas. Work on erecting the equipment, he said, would commence early next week.
An approach is being made by the Chamber of Trade to Messrs. H. Tuby and Sons with a view to a fun fair being provided during the week A request is also to be made that the approach to the fairground be illuminated
An appeal was made by Mr. May to the town’s shopkeepers to light up their shop windows on the. evening of the opening ceremony. He explained that there was no restriction on shop window lighting after 7 p.m. each evening.
