Mexborough’s Oldest
Death of Mr. G. Lidgett
The oldest resident of Mexboro’, Mr. George Lidgett, of 15, Argyle Street, died yesterday (Thursday), aged 96. A well-known character, Mr. Lidgett had been in failing health for two years.
A native of Elksley, Nottinghamshire, Mr. Lidgett had lived in Mexborough for about 30 years, coming from Parkgate, where he resided for some 36 years and kept a business as general dealer. In Mexborough, he kept a small-holding and looked after this until he reached the ripe age of 89.
He was a well-known figure in the town, and was often to be seen with his favourite dog, which died through age (15 years) just before the present war broke out. He frequently carried sweets in his pocket and could often be seen handing these to local children. It is interesting to note that Mr. Lidgett’s friend at Parkgate, the late Mr. Tyldesley, a herbalist, lived to be 100 and died a little over a year ago.
Mr. Lidgett’s wife died 30 years ago, and since then he had lived with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. L. Axon. His son, Mr. J. E. Lidgett, lives in Canada.
The interment takes place on Thursday at Mexborough Cemetery.
