Mexborough Veteran
Nonagenarian with Son Aged 73
Mr John Jackson, 46, West Road, Mexborough, who claims to be the town’s oldest resident, celebrated his 95th birthday on Monday.
Mr Jackson has been married three times, and has had 14 children, of whom seven boys and one girl are still alive.
Also, the eldest son, who lives at Huddersfield, 73 years of age, and the second son, Tom is nearly 70. One of his daughters died last year at the age of 71. He has 30 grandchildren and 10 great grand children.
Born at Cantley, near Doncaster, where his father was the village blacksmith, Mr Jackson spent most of youth at Attercliffe, Sheffield. He worked at a number of occupations before taking up the wood selling business, which he carried on until two years ago, when he was compelled to give it up as the result of an accident.
Mr Jackson’s house is remarkable considering his age. He lives alone in the house, though various members of his family spend the night at his home in turn. He is quite active though he does not leave the house, and his eyesight is good, his only failing faculty being his hearing.
