Mexborough 6 Barnsley St. Peter’s 3
Played at Mexborough on Saturday in incessant rain and before about 600 spectators. Mexborough won the toss, and decided to kick down the slope with a slight breeze in their faces.
From the kick off the homesters made for the visitors’ quarters, and in the very first run W. Bennett, jun., put one past Allwood. Again going away the home forwards were making matters extremely sultry for the visitors, and, by of good passing on the left, another goal was notched, Gough doing the needful.
The visitors now retaliated, and play for a time was fairly even. The home back division, however, was very smart. Some good work was put in on the visitors left wing, but their shooting was erratic. Breaking right array again the homesters now began to severely try the visitors’ backs, who were, however, in good form, but at last they penetrated them, and “Micky” with an excellent shot scored a third point.
Nettled by this reverse St. Peter’s had a turn and transferred play to the other end, but Collins cleared. Nevertheless they came again, and were pressing hard for a short time, and at last scored, the ball going between Chambers’ legs.
On resuming Mexborough again assailed the Barnsley citadel in force, but the goalkeeper saved his charge from further danger. Not to be denied they repeated the pressure, and W. Bennett, jun., scored again.
Another goal fell to Barnsley from a free kick which went straight through the goal posts without being touched. The point, however, was allowed much to the surprise of the spectators.
Mexborough now forced the play to the visitors end, and from a fowl W Bennett Junior shot through, but the referee did allow the point. Good and even play followed, and has time arrived with the score standing four goals to two in favour of Mexborough
After the interval St. Peter’s again made tracks for the Mexborough goal, and Wm. Bennett, sen. and Ted Whitehouse put in some good work, as did Lovett on the Inside right; in fact both teams were playing a hard and fast game. Barnsley made a rush, but E. Whitehous cleared, and the leather was taken to the other end, the St. Peter’s custodian having to save a hot ‘un from “Micky.” Hunt again tried to score, but without avail, the backs defending in fine style.
At length Barnsley by some neat passing on the left, enabled them to reach the home quarters but not for long, as H. E. Bennett, by a huge kick, put the ball to Hunt, who, after a dashing run up, put goal number 5 passed the Barnsley.
St. Peter’s still pressed, and out of a scrimmage in the mouth the ball was forced through the upright.
From the kick-off Barnsley again attacked the home citadel, but he Whitehouse was “all there” and said with a clear kick. Another attack by the visitors ended in Woolhouse shooting wide, just afterwards Smith landed high over the bar.
Gough now made a fine run on the left, but was eventually foiled by the right are “(Ward), via tremendous kick sent the globe into the home quarters, and Collins was compelled to give a corner, which, however proved futile.
Directly after the Barnsley forwards attacked strongly, and the ball was cleverly shot through from the right wing (5 -3).
After resuming Barnsley rushed down the field and Sam Hunt in the centre, had a fine opening, but kicked outside. Then a dashing run was made for the St. Peter’s citadel, which ended in the ball going over the bar.
- Bennett, sen., now got possession, and made a splendid run up the centre, and with a swift low shut beat Allwood a sixth time.
Shortly before time Walter Bennett got “winded,” and was taken off the field, Nothing further occurred, and a goad game ended.
