Mexborough Tech Campers for Ireland
Fulfilling their role as “ Good Neighbours,” technical day students of Mexborough Schofield College will next year visit Northern Ireland for their summer camp, completing a cycle of the British Isles.
Two years ago they made an English journey; camped at Dis, in Norfolk. Last year they went north – to Edinburgh; this year West, to Towyn, in Merionethshire.
Making arrangements for next year’s camp, the College Principal, Mr Matthew Clark, has contacted the Education Officer; In Belfast and reports a very cordial reception. Efforts are being made to find a school to accommodate the 140 to 150 visitors, and already there have been offers of a mapped out touring programme
With the exception of Dis, where they were under canvas, the parties have been billeted in school buildings. In Edinburgh, old Civil Defence resources were tapped, and beds and mattresses were provided. The Central kitchen was placed at the visitors’ disposal. In Dis, the officer commanding an American operated airfield placed field kitchens at their disposal and showed the party over the airfield—a particular delight to the boys. In all the three holiday centres organised tours were arranged.
Object of the scheme is educational; to enable John Citizen to learn about his neighbour. At the moment, with existing travel and monetary difficulties, there is a ” query ” against foreign tours; but they are on the agenda, There is a standing invitation to a party to visit Denmark, where this year Mr Clarrie Mason, College P.T. instructor, undertook a course of training. The scheme would incorporate the visit of a football eleven from the college.
The Cost to each student for two weeks worked out at £2 12s. weeks to £2 15s.—the maximum. No wonder there have been applications from part-time day students—who are old students! Unfortunately, it is not possible at the moment to include them.
