Mexborough and Swinton Times March 16, 1928
The team that will face Liverpool: Stubbs; Lawrence, Hardy; Hallam, Street Boulton; Burton, Gittins, South, Beard, Parker.
On the Hampden Road ground tomorrow two important matches of a different order to those usually staged there will be played. At one o’clock the Mexborough School Sports Association team will replay their tie with Liverpool in the first round of the English School Shield competition proper; and if they win will be among the last sixteen and will’ tackle Worksop at Worksop.
No Mexborough team has ever won this national trophy, but the local association believe this year they have a chance that has never come lofore—and might never come again. For an association like this to come out on top in strenuous competition with the whole resources of the school sport organisation of Great Britain is a mighty big proposition; and success in it a tremendous honour for the Mexboro’ district. Those who have seen the Mexboro’ team in action, however, have great hope that Mexboro’ can do it. The team have also won through to the semi-final round of the other important school competition in this part of the country: the Yorkshire Shield competition; and have yet to fix up their semi-final tie with Sheffield. The photograph above shows the team that drew at Liverpool, that put up such a good game against Mexborough Boys at Hampden Road last Monday week, that will turn out against Liverpool to-morrow, and that hopes to bring off the notable double of elementary school sport.
