Mexborough Parish Church
Beautification of the Sanctuary
A scheme for the beautification of the sanctuary of Mexborough Parish Church, designed by Mr. Leslie Moore, F.R.I.B.A. has been accepted by the Parochial Church Council, and it is hoped to begin the work at an early date. The estimated cost of the improvement is £500. The cost of certain parts of the scheme has already been guaranteed by promised donation.
The scheme provides for the alteration of the floor levels of the sanctuary, for new communicant kneelers, and for a very beautiful triptych in oak with painted panels and symbols. The entre panel of the triptych (which is formed in position over the altar in the above drawing) is of the crucifixion scene; the panel at the north end depicts St. John Baptist, patron saint of the Church, and the panel at the south end is of St. Peter, and emphasises the association of the parish with the arch-diocese of York.
The other eight panels are of northern saints connected particularly with the story of Christianity in Northumbria, and are (from north to south); St. William of York, St. Hilda, the Venerable Bede, St. Columba, and St, Wilfrid. The triptych also bears seven shields, symbols of Our Lord, while the candle sticks shown on the altar are designed in silver, and there will be altar frontals to blend with the scheme.
