New Relief Road Means New Shopping Pattern
“People are now able to get about the town far more easily, and so shopping has become moreof a pleasure and must benefit all concerned,” he said.
Current president of the Chamber of Trade, Mr George Sinclair, also spoke of the undoubted advantage the new road had brought.
The reduced volume of traffic using Main Street, High Street and Bank Street, meant, he said that people could shop in the town in much greater comfort and safety.
“We feel we have competitive and selective shopping facilities in Mexborough, and with the advantages provided by the road we are now hoping people will come into the town to do their shopping, and see for themselves.
Mr. Sinclair stressed that the relief road should not deter people from coming into the town by car. There were adequate parking facilities available which were conveniently situated for the main shopping area.
And there was an optimistic note for the future from the chairman of Mexborough Urban Council, Coun. J. C. Willetts who said the Council were continually striving to improve parking facilities to cope with the increasing amount of traffic which was coming into the town.
“There is always room for improvement, but it is a question of waiting until suitable becomes available,” he added,
So it looks as though the pessimists were wrong. That three-quarters-of-a-mile stretch of dual-carriageway, far from cutting Mexborou0 off the map, has set the scene for its further establishment as a major shopping centre.
It has led to greatly improved facilities for local shoppers and visitors alike. Mexborough’s wide variety of shops and business should do the rest.
It is probably significant that one of the first new office blocks to go up in the town for some years is now nearing completion.
Insurance brokers Bourne and Swann expect to move into their new premises in Main Street in the near future, and Mr. Thomas Bourne described the move as a mark of the firm’s faith in the future of Mexborough.
