Mexborough Motorist Summoned
Frank Wilkinson, Mexborough, was summoned for having driven a motorcar at a dangerous speed, at Swinton on January 31.
PC Hayes said that at 10:30 a.m. on January 31st, he was on duty, with PC Lunn, in Wath Road, Roman Terrace, Swinton, when he saw the defendant driving a motor car. It was travelling at a rapid pace, and the defendant was driving recklessly. There was a good deal of traffic about, and the car nearly collided with the boy, who was wheeling a barrow. The witness motioned and shouted to the defendant, and although he looked at the officer he did not stop, but proceeded towards Roman Terrace. The road, which is about 8 yards wide was very muddy and greasy. There were several streets which ran at right angles to the road. Witness estimated the speed from 16 to 18 mph. When the defendant was seen he said he was not going at above 10 mph.
For the defence it was urged that Wilkinson was not travelling at more than 10 miles an hour. This speed was recorded by a speedometer on the car.
The magistrates considered that there was a certain amount of danger, but that the case would be met by the payment of costs.
