Mexborough and Swinton Times April 23, 1937
On January 30, 1890, the Mexborough Montagu Cottage Hospital was opened after the conversion of a disused house in Bank Street. There were 14 beds and the Matron constituted the staff.
On Saturday last the dedication and open three new departments and the new ward to complete an extension scheme costing in all £21,000 took place. The Hospital has now more than 100 beds and a staff of 70.
Between these two dates are enclosed many fascinating chapters that tell of the steady rise of the Montagu hospital. From the first year to last the Montagu hospital has lived and grown on the basis of the voluntary system
