Mexborough Man’s “Small World ” Meeting in Rhodesia
Working in Gwelo, Southern Rhodesia, a 29 years old man, Mr. Roy Hughes, 55 Windhill Crescent, recently engaged a new joiner for the Government building project of which he is clerk of works.
“I’m from Doncaster,” the joiner informed Mr. Hughes, only to be told that he was speaking to a Mexboro’ man.
Questioned by Mr. Hughes the joiner said he only knew two people in Mexborough—” a Mr. Bacon and a Mr. Rodwell Elliott.”
The “Mr. Bacon ” is Mr. Hughes’ grandfather, Mr. Arthur Bacon, 5, Rawlinson Terrace, Mexborough. Mr. Bacon is a joiner.
Relating the incident in a letter to his parents, M and Mrs. D. Hughes, Mr. Hughes comments: ” A small world isn’t it ? ” He does not, however, give the name of the joiner.
Mr. Hughes has been in Southern Rhodesia for two years. During the war, while serving as a warrant officer in the R.A.F., he was stationed at Bulawayo and Gwelo. He celebrates his birthday to-morrow (Saturday).
