Mexborough Man’s Assault

An assault in Mexborough market place had a sequel at the Doncaster West Riding Police Court On Tuesday. when Walter Barwick, unemployed, of Mexborough, was fined £1 for committing wilful damage to beetroot, and assaulting Robert D. Wall.

Mr. Wall said he had instructed his stall attendant in Mexborough market to sell his beetroots at flve-pence a pound, and threepence per half-pound.

Barwick, said Wall caused a disturbance when the attendant refused to sell him half a pound of beetroots for 2s 6d and overturned a box of vegetables. When spoken to Barwick became offensive and began to swear. He struck at Wall and said ” I’ll drive a —– railroad through you.”

Barwick said he struck Wall in self-defence and under provocation. .
