Mexborough Man Flies as Royal Escort

A Mexborough man and former Swinton schoolboy, 33-years-old, Police Inspector Frank Kelly is one of two police escorts travelling with Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh on their Canadian tour.

Inspector Kelly was born in Doncaster Road, Swinton, and attended Swinton Fitzwilliam school. At 15, Insp. Kelly left Swinton with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kelly, for London, where he joined the Merchant Navy.  At 19, he joined the Police Force. He is now stationed at Cannon Street Station with the Metropolitan Police.

His duties on the Canadian tour will be familiar, for he accompanied the Princess and the Duke on their visits to Malta and Greece.  Between such duties, Insp. Kelly’s special care is Prince Charles and this takes him regularly to Clarence House.

Before leaving for Canada, Insp. Kelly was given a week’s leave after being on duty at Balmoral. On the way down to his home in Camberwell where his wife and 7-years old son Peter, are keenly following the royal tour. Insp. Kelly dropped in at Station Road, Bawtry, to see his mother and father.

A last-minute blow for Insp. Kelly, before the B.A.O.C. Stratocruiser left London Airport on Monday, was news of the sudden death of his grandmother, Mrs. Fletcher, at the age of 82 at her home, 118, Doncaster Road, Mexborough.
