Mexborough & District Licensed Victuallers’ Association Annual Meeting
At the annual meeting of the Mexborough and District Licensed Victuallers’ Association, held at the Montagu Arms Hotel, Mexborough on Tuesday, Mr. G. W. Stables, of Swinton, was elected President, Mr. A. V. Pabor (Mexborough), vice-president; Mr. J. B. Sayer (Mexborough), secretary; Mr. J. Lowe, treasurer; Messrs. W. H. Hughes, D. Hulse, M. Fowler, L. Jones, and S. Bannister, Executive Committee.
Mr. Stables took the opportunity, on behalf of the Association, of presenting a silver cigarette case to Mr. Harold Mayger (picture) who has recently taken over the licence of the Broadfield Hotel, Sheffield.
Mr. Mayger for the past three years has been the licensee of the South Yorkshire Hotel and president of the Mexborough Licensed Victuallers’ Association. Before coming to Mexborough, he was licensee of the Imperial Hotel, Barnsley. During his connection with the Mexborough Licensed Victuallers’ Association he has done much to increase the interest of the members in the movement, and they part with him with the greatest regret.
Mr. Stables indicated this in the course of the presentation and said he had hoped that Mr. Mayger would have stayed long enough to take a prominent part in the public life of the district. Mr. A. V.Tabor spoke to similar effect, and Mr. N. Fowler, of Goldthorpe, also conveyed the good wishes of the Association, which were briefly and modestly acknowledged by Mr. Mayger, who said he had been very happy in Mexborough and would always recall his association with the licensed trade of that district with pleasure and satisfaction. ,
