Mexborough and Swinton Times April 6, 1928
Mexborough Labour Party Attains Power.
Surprising Result.
The result of the voting at Mexboro’ was surprising. Of the five retiring members three were not returned, and the Labour party, who put four candidates in the field, secured the election of three, a net gain of two, which was sufficient to secure for the party a majority on the Council.
Of the 17 members eight are pledged nominees of the party, and one or two others may he relied upon generally to vote with the party.
The tide of the Labour vote ‘ran so strongly, indeed, that it nearly secured the election of all four candidates.
Mr. Jesse Walton, though young and unknown, received over 800 votes, and was well up the list
Mr W Frow, who seems to enjoy the esteem and confidence of all parties, was placed triumphantly in the end of the poll,
Mr G Morley (picture, bottom) after a long series of defeats, had the consolation of being placed second, with nearly 1000 votes.
The third Labour candidate to secure electron Mr W H Johnson (picture, top), who was given fifth place.
Mr J.E.Cliff, who was head of the poll in his two previous contests, fell to 4th place.
