Mexborough Fire Brigade
On Saturday a youth, acting, it is said, on no instructions, rushed from the direction of Denaby into Mexborough and rang the fire bell alarm, first of all breaking the glass which is placed beneath the bells sort protection against practical jokes.
In a very few minutes half a dozen members of the brigade, fully equipped, were astir, and the engine was out and horses attached. It was some time before the scene of the supposed fire could discovered, and then a blaze was discovered in the direction of Barnborough.
On arrival thither it was seen that the brigade had been needlessly called, the flames proceeded from a halfburnt stack, which first caught alight about fortnight ago and which the brigade at that time vainly endeavoured to extinguish.
Their services on the present occasion were of no avail, and they retraced their steps, vowing vengeance the youth who had been the cause their fruitless journey.
An inquiry will be instituted.
