Mexborough Doctors 50 years of service

For more than 50 years a medical practitioner in Mexborough, Doctor John James Huey, who has given outstanding service to the St John ambulance Brigade for 40 years is retired from active service with the Brigade on the occasion of his removal from Mexborough to Scarborough

Doctor Huey, a native of Castle Derg, Tyrone, Northern Ireland, obtained his professional training at Trinity College, Dublin and was for many years Medical Officer to Mexborough Urban Council

He began his activities with the Ambulance movement in 1907 when he was appointed lecturer to Denaby Division and was later appointed Divisional Surgeon to Denaby Nursing Division .He was next appointed Corps Surgeon to Denaby Main Corps in 1912 and in 1942 was promoted County Surgeon.

In 1932 he succeeded the late Mr H Hulley as Assistant Commissioner, a position he held until his recent resignation.

Doctor Huey was appointed Honorary Associate Member of the Order St John of Jerusalem in – 1925. In 1924 he was awarded the Service Medal.

He undertook ambulance duties in London and was awarded the Coronation Medal in 1911. During the 1914-18 war he offered his services to the War Office acted on medical boards and as military representative on six tribunals.

Doctor Huey has also held a numb of public appointments, including Poor Law Medical Officer. Police surgeon, post office surgeon, Ministry of Pensions referee and public vaccination officer.

Dr. and Mrs. Huey and their family have played a prominent part the social life of the district and in the hey-day of such enjoyable functions as the Cricket Club Ball and the Hospital Ball Dr Huey wasan outstanding figure in the organisation.

He retired from practice in 1942
